Accommodation in Ngorongoro Crater
This guide explains how the three zones differ, compares the lodges at every level, profiles the leading properties, flags where published rates and tier labels disagree, shows how the conservation area’s fees, including the US$295 per-vehicle crater service fee, change the real cost and suggests which kind of stay suits which traveller. It finishes with a booking checklist and common mistakes. Rates vary widely by season and room, so confirm every figure before you book.

Three Zones: Rim, Karatu and the Eastern Rim
The conservation area has its own authority, separate from the national parks, which is why its fee structure is different. Our separate guide to Ngorongoro fees explains each charge.
| Factor | Crater Rim | Karatu Highlands | Eastern Rim |
| Views | Direct views over the caldera | Gardens and coffee estates, with no crater view | Forest setting near the gate, with some caldera views |
| Drive to the descent road | About 10 to 20 minutes | A long, early start: about 45 minutes to the gate and another 45 to the rim in one guide | About 10 to 15 minutes at some camps |
| Temperature | Cold at night because of the altitude | Milder | Cool and forested |
| Price | Higher, with concession fees in some rates | Lower, and no concession fee | Mid to high |
| Best for | Views and early crater access | Value, space and calm | A bush feel and quiet starts |
The Lodges Compared
The pattern is that Karatu holds the budget and mid-range stays, Sopa and Serena sit at the lower end of the rim and the flagship and the eastern-rim camps hold the top. Other names include Marera Valley Lodge, The Retreat at Ngorongoro and Crater View Inn in Karatu.

The Rim Lodges
andBeyond Ngorongoro Crater Lodge is the flagship and most iconic hotel on the rim, known for dramatic views, butler service and an ornate style that some guests love and others find overwhelming. Rates vary from about US$1,160 in low season to US$1,950 in peak, and above US$3,000 in one guide.
Ngorongoro Serena Safari Lodge is built into the western rim rock-face with a spa and caldera views, and is fenced, which suits families. Ngorongoro Sopa Lodge offers phenomenal views and basic but comfortable rooms at the lowest rim price.
Ngorongoro Meliá Collection offers a full-service luxury hotel on the rim for travellers who want amenities with the views. All the rim lodges suit travellers who want the earliest access to the crater floor and the iconic view, and all are cold at night, so ask about heating and blankets. One guide suggests spending a single rim night at the end of a trip, so the view feels like a finale. Our separate guides to lodges near the crater describe each level in more detail.
Karatu Estates and the Value Choices
Karatu is the budget and mid-range base, a small highland town about 20 kilometres from the crater gates among coffee plantations. Gibb’s Farm is the best-known luxury property here, with farm-to-table food, gardens and wellness, and no crater view. Kitela Lodge, Acacia Farm Lodge and Ngorongoro Farm House form the mid-range core, at about US$227 to US$550 depending on the property, with Farm House praised for its capacity and suitability for families and groups.
At the budget end, Bougainvillea Safari Lodge, Marera Valley Lodge and Crater View Inn offer rooms from about US$140 per room, with camping available at some. Because Karatu is outside the conservation area, its lodges do not pay concession fees, which keeps rates down. The trade-off is time, since you need to leave early for the crater.
The Eastern Rim and the In-Gate Option
Lion’s Paw and Lemala Ngorongoro Tented Camp sit on the eastern rim, near the quiet Lemala gate. Both are described as good for photographers and early starts, with a forest atmosphere rather than a direct rim view, at about US$600 to US$900. One older review calls the Lemala camp nice but basic for the price, so check recent guest feedback. Entamanu, named after a Maasai word meaning circle, is another rim camp.
Ngorongoro Rhino Lodge, inside the conservation area gate, is the value option inside the area, at about US$250 to US$400 per night, though it incurs the concession fee. These suit travellers who want to be close to the crater without paying for the flagship lodges.
How Fees Change the Real Cost
The crater fee is per vehicle, so a full vehicle shares it. A couple pays US$147.50 each, while a group of four pays US$73.75 each. Staying in Karatu avoids the concession fee, but you still pay entry and the crater fee. Even so, the cost of a crater day is about US$145 to US$220 per person in fees, whichever way you sleep.
| Fee | Reported Amount | Applies To |
| Conservation area entry, adult | About US$70.80 including VAT, per 24 hours | Everyone entering the area, including from Karatu |
| Crater service fee | US$295 | Per vehicle per descent, so group size matters |
| Concession fee | About US$59 to US$71 per adult per night | Lodges inside the area, such as the rim lodges, not Karatu |
| Vehicle entry fee | About US$10 to US$40 depending on the guide | Per vehicle per day |

Choosing by Traveller Type
If you can afford only one rim night, many travellers spend it in the middle of the trip. If you want both luxury and value, combine a Karatu estate with a single rim night.
| If You Are | Consider | Why |
| A honeymooner who wants the ultimate view | andBeyond Ngorongoro Crater Lodge | The most dramatic position and service |
| A couple who want rim views at a moderate price | Ngorongoro Sopa or Serena | Rim position with fewer frills |
| A family on a budget | Ngorongoro Farm House or Acacia Farm Lodge | Space, gardens and lower per-person rates |
| A photographer who wants early access | Lion’s Paw or Lemala | Short drives to the descent road |
| A traveller who wants calm and food | Gibb’s Farm or Kitela Lodge | Gardens, farm food and quiet |
| On a tight budget | Bougainvillea or another Karatu hotel | The lowest nightly cost |
