9 Days Rwanda Chimps, Golden Monkeys, Hiking and Cultural Tour
Day 1: Arrival in Kigali
Depending on your arrival time in Kigali, our Company representative will pick you up from Kigali International Airport and transport you to your hotel for supper and an overnight stay at Step Town Hotel (Budget), Des Milles Collines Hotel (Midrange), or Radisson Blu Hotel Kigali.
Note: If the flight arrives in Kigali between 12am and 11am, you can take a brief tour of the city, seeing destinations such as the Genocide Memorial Centre, Kimironko Market, Caplaki Craft Village, and Nyamirambo Women’s Centre.
Day 2: Transfer to Nyungwe Forest National Park- King’s Palace Nyanza & National Museum Butare (about 6-hour trip).
In the morning, the driver will pick you up from your Kigali hotel and transfer you south to Nyungwe Forest National Park. You will make a stop in Butare to visit the Rwandan National Museum, the Nyanza King’s Palace, and the Rwanda Genocide Memorial Site. After lunch, return to your accommodations to enjoy the evening at leisure.
Dinner and stay at Gisakura Guesthouse (Budget), Nyungwe Top Hill View Hotel (Midrange), or the One & Only Nyungwe House (Luxury).
Day 3: Chimp Trek and Canopy Walk.
Before entering the jungle in search of the lively and playful colleagues in Nyungwe forest, stop for breakfast and a briefing on endangered chimps. Chimpanzees are considerably simpler to recognise since they hop from one tree to another while chatting and laughing. Chimpanzee tracking typically takes roughly three hours. Spend an hour searching for them and photographing and filming. You’ll then return to the hotel for lunch.
After lunch, you’ll take a walking route to the Canopy Walk, a 50-meter-long swing bridge strung between enormous trees. You’ll be able to observe the magnificent jungle from above, observing wildlife as it moves about below. Before nightfall, you will return to the lodge Gisakura Guesthouse (Budget), Nyungwe Top Hill View Hotel (Midrange), or One & Only Nyungwe House (Luxury) for dinner , as described above.
Day 4: Nature Walk and Transfer back to Kigali. (About a 6-hour trip)
Breakfast at your leisure, then travel to the park for a guided nature walk to either the Kamiranzovu or Isumo waterfalls. The trek starts at 9am on a 5.9 km track and takes around 3½ hours to complete round trip.
After your trek, eat lunch and then head to Kigali, where your driver/guide will drop you off at a hotel for dinner and an overnight stay at Step Town Hotel (Budget), Des Milles Collines Hotel (Midrange) or Radisson Blu Hotel (Luxury).
Day 5: Transfer to Akagera National Park and afternoon boat cruise (about 2 hour trip)
Your driver guide will meet you at your hotel and transfer you to Akagera National Park, where you will arrive in time for a late afternoon boat cruise on Lake Ihema, where you will see hippopotamuses, crocodiles, and a variety of bird species that live in the lake and surrounding swamps.
Dinner and stay at the Akagera Game Lodge
Day 6: Game drive in the morning, then drive to Volcanoes National Park. (Approximately five hours)
Rise early and go for a game drive, excited to witness the many animals that rise early to graze and predators searching for their early morning meal. In the park, you may see elephants, zebras, buffaloes, giraffes, rhinos, reedbuck, waterbuck, leopards, impalas, lions, duikers, and many more species. Following the game drive, you will travel to Volcanoes National Park, arriving in the evening. Check into your lodge for supper and overnight stay at Tiloreza Eco Lodge (Midrange) or Muhabura Hotel (Budget).
Day 7: Golden Monkey Trek and the Ibyi’wacu Cultural Tour
Have breakfast and then reconnect for another exciting primate adventure. Prior to the golden monkey trekking, you will receive a briefing and then set out into the jungle to interact with the little but lively primates.
Following the golden monkey excursion, return to your accommodation for lunch. After lunch, visit Ibyi’wacu Village for a cultural experience. You will next visit the historic King’s Palace and see a wonderful dance and singing performance by the local dance ensemble. Return to your lodge for dinner and an overnight stay at Tiloreza Eco Lodge (Midrange) or Muhabura Hotel (Budget).
Day 8: Transfer to Lake Kivu-Gisenyi and afternoon boat cruise (about an hour’s drive).
Wake up at your leisure and enjoy a relaxing breakfast at your lodge. You will then meet your driving guide and be transferred to Lake Kivu in Gisenyi. Arrive on time to check in at your accommodation and have lunch. After lunch, you’ll meet your driver guide and go for an afternoon boat excursion on Lake Kivu in a traditional canoe. Explore the lake and its islands, as well as the area’s bird species, which include White-breasted Cormorants, African Fish Eagles, and Pied Kingfishers. Return to your accommodation for dinner and an overnight stay at Paradise Malahide (Budget) or Gorilla Kivu Lodge (Middle Range).
Day 9: Optional Coffee Tour and Transfer Back to Kigali.
Have breakfast at your hotel in the morning and then check out. You can take an optional coffee trip and visit the Kinunu washing station in Gisenyi before returning to Kigali. This is an optional activity, so please let us know in advance if you want to include it on your agenda. Later, travel back to Kigali City, stopping for lunch along the way, and drop off at any Kigali hotel or Kigali International Airport as directed.
